Why We Are ?

By refugees, for refugees.

Inspired by a chance encounter at an Atlanta apartment complex, Fugees Family began as a soccer team for local refugee youth. Seeing the challenges these children faced off the soccer field, founder Luma Mufleh – herself the daughter and granddaughter of Syrian refugees – was motivated by her grandmother’s advice:

“Don’t feel sorry for refugees — believe in them.”

The Fugees quickly grew beyond soccer. It evolved into a comprehensive support network, including a tutoring program, a summer camp, and a school: Fugees Academy, a tuition-free, community-based public charter school in Atlanta.

Fugees Family now collaborates with school districts across the country through Teranga Academy, a Fugees-inspired newcomer program that helps public schools better serve newcomer students.
