Our why

Refugees and immigrants make America – and its future.

Refugees and immigrants – the fastest-growing population in American public schools – are essential members of our communities. But our education system is failing to meet their needs.

Nationwide, one in four English Language Learners drops out of school, and refugee children are five times more likely to be out of school than their non-refugee peers.

Too often, the U.S. school system fails to create environments that empower and equip newcomer students. We know that with the right approach, students who previously couldn’t write their own names can jump three grade levels in math and reading in as little as one year.

We’re on a mission to prove that being a refugee or immigrant isn’t something to be defined by, but something to be
proud of.

Built by and for refugees and immigrants, Fugees Family has a 20-year track record of working with newcomer students.

Our model is designed to meet the specific needs of American refugee and immigrant youth navigating a new culture and community.

For refugees and immigrants in the U.S., English equals opportunity. Our English immersion model gets students up-to-speed in a safe, supportive environment that encourages English acquisition while celebrating each student’s cultural identity.

At Fugees, there’s no shame in being a beginner.
