Service Description:
The Fugees Family is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that was started in October 2006 to help child survivors of war rebuild their lives and realize their potential. What started as free access to soccer grew to include tutoring and now has become a full-time private academy for 35 middle-school students in addition to after-school athletic and educational programs for 40 high-school and 40 elementary-school students.
The Fugees Family soccer and academic programs for at-risk refugee youth are free for all participants. Fugees Family programs are tailored to the needs expressed by the refugee boys and girls that it serves, in pursuit of the Fugees Family mission: to help child survivors of war rebuild their lives, one step at a time.
AmeriCorps Service Members serve vital roles in the Fugees Soccer and Tutoring program, acting as tutors, team managers, and mentors to Fugees players and their families. The AmeriCorps Service Member position is a full-time national service opportunity with a stipend of approximately $200 per week. With the completion of the required 1700 hours, AmeriCorps members are eligible for the Segal Education award, approximately $5,000 which can be applied toward student loans or future tuition. Health insurance is also provided. There are 2 types of Service Member positions available with the Fugees; please see the attached position descriptions for more information. Hiring for all positions is subject to approval of grant renewal.
Fugees Family programs run concurrently with the school year. The AmeriCorps Service Member obligation will begin with the beginning of the school year in August 2012 and run through the end of the Fugees Summer Academic Boot Camp in July 2013.
Before applying, please carefully review the AmeriCorps State and National program details and FAQs on the americorps.gov website. *Note: If you submit this application to the Fugees Family, you do NOT have to apply through the AmeriCorps website.
